Yesterday, we had 18 pups on board.

A mixture of puppies, adults, Pitties, a German Shepard, and Husky's, one of which you see here.

A last minute save from death row, the two Husky's were not in the original flight plan; a rescue reached out to me, quite literally at the 11th hour before our flight, and asked if we could take them.

Knowing I had room on the airplane, it was a no brainer - the one thing we will never ever do is turn away an animal if we have the space to take them.

Every time I load the aircraft, it's a delicate balance of placement, to ensure we load within limits, and keep the weight and balance where it needs to be during flight.

Early on I decided this girl would be co-pawlet; she had a very sweet and gentle demeanor, and weighed just enough to help offset our loading.

This is how she slept, for the entire flight; her little tooshy hanging off of the seat, but she didn't care. When you've just come from death row, I imagine that just about any sleeping arrangement would be more comfortable then what you had been through.

I would reach over and pet her, stroke her fur, and just remind her everything would be ok. It's a moment where you get to reflect on the fact that just 24 hours before, she and her crewmate would have been euthanized, simply because they were out of time.

Now, both on board our aircraft, headed to a new life over 500 miles away. Sometimes my friends, miracles really do happen ❤

THIS IS Melvin.

As you know, I meet my sending rescue groups at various airports, usually stretching from Virginia into North Carolina; a short while back I would meet Melvin, as we were loading up pups at the Emporia-Greensville Regional airport in Emporia, Virginia.

As the universe would have it, Melvin didn't always work at the airport, in fact, the reason he started working there was to complete community service placed upon him.

It turns out that Melvin once had a pup he had to rehome - entrusting the care of the pup to another person, he would later find that the dog had been taken to the shelter, and was going to be euthanized.

Now, as with most all of us, sometimes our hearts are a little larger than our noggins - upon learning this information, aided by, maybe, a few beers, Melvin set out to save the pup, but not so much in a way the local law might allow.

He ended up getting his dog out of the shelter, just not during normal business hours one might say - and in the process, set free 10 other dogs that were going to be killed the next day.

Suffice to say, the local law was not amused, and well, Melvin ended up in some hot water - eventually serving his community service at the airport - and years later, actually becoming regularly employed there.

Personally, I can be a man that often lets his heart get in the way of his brain, and well, understand. To quote Melvin, "it's not the first time I had done it, just the first time I'd been caught."

Now obviously we don't condone doing this, and while this may have all happened 20 years ago, I thought you all might like to know, because you really do meet some great people in rescue.

If you ever find yourself in Emporia, Virginia, stop in to the airport and say hi - Melvin is a true gentleman with a big heart.

Another memory as we celebrate our 8th year anniversary.

December 8th, 2016.

Kimber, and Rocky, as I met them at the airport in NC for their ride north. We've flown a lot of dogs you know, 485 since May of 2015 as of this flight. Just when you think you've seen the worst of what this world can do, a few more come along.

As I look at this photo, and go through the memory of the moment, it's all a bit absurd; they have leashes on, as if they could even think of mustering the energy to run away; as it was they could barely walk by themselves.
This image is one that still haunts me - the look on their faces, gently going along to wherever they are led, blindly trusting that surely it will be no worse then from where they had come.

2 dogs, having prior never known one another, now had found themselves becoming a symbol of hope; a symbol of love; a symbol of just what can happen when the right things simply come together.
Usually my pawsengers are upbeat, curious, excited, nervous, not quite sure what is happening, but willing to go along for the ride.

For these two, it was a world entirely different; I could sense the pain, the agony, the abuse, the struggle to find the energy to simply stand, to walk, to simply keep on living.

And yet, despite what had been done to them, they went along willingly, with the faith that whatever lay ahead could only be better then where they had been.

You may have noticed by now that these type of flights affect me very deeply - they are the ones that linger in your mind, in your heart, and weigh heavily upon the soul. Thank you for listening, supporting, letting me decompress, and sharing this with you.

Keeping in tradition, I will be posting various memories as we celebrate 8 years of Flying Fur 🙂

Pictures are worth a thousand words, and this one definitely is for me. Left front we have miss Lucy, in process of falling asleep; our golden haired friend in the left rear is Smiley.

Smiley was found abandoned in a Walmart parking lot, left tied to a shopping cart before his rescue 😕

On the right side we have Bailey, resting on miss Merlin who is front and center 🙂

There are sooo many thoughts and emotions that go through my mind looking at this...Smiley won't have to worry about being abandoned ever again...Merlin can sleep knowing it's not the last time she'll ever wake up.

All of them will know love, compassion, and caring as they head to new furever homes in 3 different states. All of them were saved from places where they had limited options. None of them should have to fear anything ever again. This is why I do what I do.

Of my 15 plus onboard, 4 would be seniors.

3 of those 4, including these two here, would be blind.

As I understand it, their previous owner had around 10 dogs total. Sadly, they lost their home in a house fire, and their owner perished while trying to save all of them.

There are often times in life where you simply have to find the good in all of the bad - times when you must fine a pin hole of light through all of the darkness.
